
Commander Miguel Serrato was raised in the City of Oxnard. He attended Mar Vista Elementary School, Oceanview Junior High School, and Hueneme High School. Before beginning his career in law enforcement, he joined the United States Marine Corps. He served active duty for four years with 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines and was stationed in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
Miguel began his career with the Oxnard Police Department in 2005. Before being promoted to Senior Officer, he worked as a Patrol Officer, Beat Coordinator, Narcotics detective, and Major Crimes detective. As a Senior Officer, he continued working with the Major Crimes Unit. Miguel was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2020. As a Sergeant, he worked as a Patrol Sergeant, Patrol Support/Traffic Unit Sergeant, and Internal Affairs Sergeant. Additionally, he served as the Mounted Unit Sergeant as a collateral assignment.
In December 2024, Miguel was promoted to Commander and serves as a patrol watch commander, overseeing District Three. He also oversees the School Resource Officer Unit, the Neighborhood Policing Team, the Honor Guard, and the Mounted Unit. Miguel holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and is a graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute (Class #520). Since 2023, Miguel has been the President of the Oxnard Mounted Unit Foundation, a non-profit organization.
Miguel lives in Oxnard with his family and continues to be very active with his community.
