Senate Bill 2 (SB 2) was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom on September 30, 2021 and it’s purpose is to increase accountability for peace office misconduct.

Effective January 1, 2020, Senate Bill 978 (SB 978) requires all local law enforcement agencies post on their websites all current standards, policies, practices, operating procedures, and education and training materials that would otherwise be available to the public.

On January 1, 2019, California Senate Bill 1421 (SB 1421) went into effect, which amended California Penal Code section 832.7 and gave the public access to police personnel records related to reports, investigations, and findings. On January 1, 2023, California Senate Bill 16 (SB 16) went into effect, which expanded SB 1421.

On September 30, 2021, Governor Newsom signed legislation aimed at reforming law enforcement agency funding, acquisition and use of specific types of “military equipment.”

AB 748 amended Government Code 6254, and became effective as of July 1, 2019. It allows a video or audio recording that relates to a critical incident, as defined, to be withheld for 45 calendar days.

On September 30, 2020, Assembly Bill (AB) 1506 was signed into law, which now requires the California Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate all incidents of officer involved shootings (OIS) resulting in the death of an “unarmed civilian.”
