Project Overview
Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a national initiative to enhance the safety of students and their families traveling to and from school. SRTS brings communities together to learn the responsibilities that each person has when walking, biking, or driving. The program also studies common routes traveled by students and recommends potential investments for the City to enhance the accessibility of streets for everyone.

On June 7, 2022, Oxnard City Council approved the Safe Routes to School Safety and Enhancements CIP project. The project has two components (1) infrastructure improvements at selected schools, and (2) non-infrastructure improvements at 53 schools.
Walk + Roll to School Day 2025
Get ready to walk and roll to school on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 as part of the National Walk Bike and Roll to school event! Students, families, and staff are encouraged to walk, bike, or roll to school to promote physical activity and reduce the use of a vehicle. Contact your school office directly for specific details about their planned activities!

Oxnard’s Safe Routes to School Program
The first component was to design and construct infrastructure improvements at selected schools: Curren, Harrington, Kamala, Lemonwood and Fremont. These improvements were completed in February 2025, and included installing curb extensions (to shorten crossings and enhance visibility), pedestrian flashing beacons and signage, and high visibility (ladder style) crosswalks as well as traditional crosswalks with reflective striping.
The second component involves non-infrastructure safe routes to school bike/walk plans and educational outreach at schools. This component has two phases. The first phase was completed in February 2025 at 26 schools. The second phase is currently ongoing at 27 other schools and is expected to be completed in summer of 2025.
The City is working in partnership with school staff from schools throughout Oxnard to:
- Conduct walking audits to identify existing conditions along key routes to school.
- Create SRTS maps to share with students and families.
- Host free educational workshops and events (including the participation in the National Walk + Roll to school events in May and October).
- Provide a toolkit of free resources to schools.

Art Competition
Imagine if you didn’t take a bus or a car to school.
How would you get there?
Oxnard students are invited to create and submit an original art piece with the theme, “Why drive, when you can…?” Students were encouraged to submit artwork showing the different ways they would get to school without using a vehicle (such as a bus or car). This project inspired conversations about alternative transportation and the opportunities that exist for walking, biking or skating to school.
