The City of Oxnard is located on the “Gold Coast” of sunny California, approximately halfway between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, and is known as the gateway to the Channel Islands.
As Ventura County’s most populous city, Oxnard is home to more than 200,000 community members that celebrate the city’s vibrant multicultural heritage. Since its incorporation in 1903, Oxnard has operated as a full-service city. The local government is responsible for providing many services necessary to daily life, ranging from public safety, trash, water and sewer, to planning and building, parks, libraries, youth and senior recreation programs, housing authority, and maintaining the city’s streets, sidewalks, and public parks.
Oxnard operates under the council-manager form of government. The City consists of an elected Mayor holding a four-year term and six councilmembers elected by district for four-year terms. The City’s other elected officials are the City Clerk and the City Treasurer.
The City Council appoints the City Manager and City Attorney. The City Manager is responsible for assisting the City Council in its policy-making role, providing information and advice, implementing policy and managing approved services.
