Public Invited to Learn More About Oxnard’s Plan to Bring High-Speed Fiber Optic Network to the City
Oxnard, California – Want to learn more about Oxnard’s master plan to leverage its fiber optic network to bring high-speed Internet and “smart city” services to the city? Now’s your chance.
Oxnard’s Information Technology department is inviting the public to attend an Oxnard Fiber Master Plan/Broadband Community Workshop.
When: Tuesday, Aug. 14, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Where: Oxnard City Hall, HR Activity Room, 300 West Third Street, Oxnard
Topics will include: Why fiber and why a Fiber Master Plan?; Oxnard’s fiber network; benefits of broadband, “Smart cities” and the Internet of Things; government’s role in broadband; the Fiber Master Plan engagement; business models; and next steps.
Background: In June 2018, the City of Oxnard began the process of developing a citywide Fiber Master Plan for building a high-speed fiber optic network to bring gigabit-speed Internet to the city. It has contracted with Magellan Advisors and Iteris, Inc., to assist in developing a plan that achieves Oxnard’s goal of leveraging its current fiber assets to become a “Tech” and “Gigabit” city.
The City of Oxnard currently maintains a fiber-optic network that spans more than 35 miles throughout the city and is used to connect traffic signals, city facilities and internal city services. Oxnard’s leadership understands that access to affordable and reliable high-speed fiber-optic broadband will help support the city’s businesses, healthcare institutions, education, economic development and the implementation of Smart City and IoT (Internet of Things) devices to improve the Oxnard community for all businesses, residents and visitors.
