Recent Earthquake Swarms Remind Community to Be Prepared
OXNARD, Calif. – According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), on Aug. 10 a very significant swarm of earthquakes occurred beneath the Salton Sea in Southern California. This should serve as a reminder to the community that we live in an earthquake-prone area and should always be prepared.
The USGS advises that earthquakes cannot be predicted and their forecasts for potential earthquake activity are based on statistical analysis from previous quakes. It said the risk of larger earthquakes taking place will stay high while the swarm activity continues.
Now is the time to be sure your earthquake supplies such as food, water, batteries, first-aid kit and medication are up-to-date. It is also important to be sure you and your family know what to do if a quake should strike and that you have a plan.

ABOUT THE RECENT SWARMS
According to the USGS, in a typical week there is approximately a 1 in 10,000 chance of a magnitude 7+ earthquake on the southernmost San Andreas Fault. That probability is significantly elevated while swarm activity remains high.
The USGS notes that there are a number of possibilities that could occur within the next week. The most likely scenario (80% chance) is that earthquakes will continue to occur over the next week, but none will be larger than a magnitude 5.4.
