Updates on Fire at Former Sunkist Packaging Plant

OXNARD, Calif. – Nineteen fire engine companies and four ladder trucks responded to a major fire in Oxnard that began on Tuesday, March 5 at approximately 10:30 p.m. at the former Sunkist packaging plant located at 245 E. Colonia Rd. 

Due to the dangerous conditions within the building, firefighters maintained a defensive position around the plant to extinguish the flames, which did not spread beyond the property. As of 10 a.m. on March 6, fire department personnel remain onsite to put out the fire’s remaining embers. The building is considered a total loss.

The incident is considered to be one of the largest fires in Oxnard’s recent history. In response to the massive fire, the Oxnard Police Department provided traffic control and aerial drone footage to support firefighting efforts. Fire personnel from the Ventura County Fire Department, Ventura City Fire, and the Naval Base’s Federal Fire Ventura County also provided onsite support.

Street traffic remains closed until further notice on Oxnard Blvd. in both directions from Deodar Ave. to Cooper Rd., and Colonia Rd. from Oxnard Blvd. to Hayes Ave.

Railway traffic has resumed operations; passengers are encouraged to check for train schedule updates throughout the day in case of delays. The Oxnard School District has closed Ramona, Chavez Rose Avenue, Brekke and Frank schools until further notice. Parents and students are encouraged to follow updates from the District regarding its schedule.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and is anticipated to take some time due to the massive size. As of Wednesday morning, there were no reported deaths or injuries as a result of the fire. This is subject to change.

The City’s Public Works department is cleaning up debris from the streets impacted by the fire. Regular street sweeping schedules on Wednesday have been suspended due to rain.

OXNARD, Calif. – Diecinueve unidades de bomberos y cuatro camiones con escalera respondieron a un gran incendio en Oxnard que comenzó el martes 5 de marzo aproximadamente a las 10:30 p.m. en la antigua planta de empaque Sunkist ubicada en 245 E. Colonia Rd.

Debido a las peligrosas condiciones dentro del edificio, los bomberos mantuvieron una posición defensiva alrededor de la planta para extinguir las llamas, que no se extendieron más allá del edificio. A partir de las 10 a.m. del 6 de marzo, el personal del departamento de bomberos permanece en el lugar para apagar las brasas restantes del incendio. El edificio se considera pérdida total.

El incidente se considera uno de los incendios más grandes en la historia reciente de Oxnard. En respuesta al incendio masivo, el Departamento de Policía de Oxnard proporcionó control de tráfico e imágenes aéreas de drones para apoyar los esfuerzos de extinción de incendios. El personal de bomberos del Departamento de Bomberos del Condado de Ventura, el Departamento de Bomberos de la Ciudad de Ventura y el Departamento de Bomberos Federal del Condado de Ventura de la Base Naval también brindaron apoyo en el lugar.

El tráfico en la calle permanecerá cerrado hasta nuevo aviso en Oxnard Blvd. en ambas direcciones desde Deodar Ave. a Cooper Rd., y Colonia Rd. desde Oxnard Blvd. hasta Hayes Ave.

El tráfico ferroviario ha reanudado sus operaciones; Se anima a los pasajeros a comprobar las actualizaciones de los horarios de los trenes a lo largo del día en caso de retrasos. El Distrito Escolar de Oxnard ha cerrado las escuelas Ramona, Chavez Rose Avenue, Brekke y Frank hasta nuevo aviso. Actualmente se está investigando la causa del incendio y se prevé que llevará algún tiempo debido a su enorme tamaño. Hasta el miércoles por la mañana no se habían reportado fallecidos ni heridos como resultado del incendio. Esto está sujeto a cambios.

El departamento de Obras Públicas de la Ciudad está trabajando para limpiar los escombros de las calles afectadas por el incendio. Los horarios normales de barrido de calles del miércoles se suspendieron debido a la lluvia.
