Once a conditional job offer has been extended, the candidate will then be informed of a potential academy start date. A pre-academy orientation will be held to allow future recruits and their family to meet the training cadre and ask questions. The orientation is designed to help the recruits and their families better understand the demands of the OFD Academy.
The Oxnard Fire Department Basic Training Academy is a 16 week academy which covers the the fundamental skills, techniques, and tactics necessary to be a firefighter in the city of Oxnard. Some of the lessons include but are not limited to; hose, ladders, forcible entry, auto-extrication, low-angle rope rescue, trench rescue, vertical ventilation, and firefighter survival. The goal of the academy is to prepare trainees to be a functional member of an engine or truck company on their very first day of probation. Upon completion of the basic academy trainees will serve as probationary firefighters for an additional year where their knowledge and skills are regularly tested and examined.
